The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest employer of STEM professionals in the federal government, with approximately 300,000 civilian scientists and engineers. The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Change (SMART) Scholarship Service Program is a joint academic and workforce development opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students funded by the DoD.

Honorable Ronald V. Dellums (1935–2018) was born in Oakland, CA. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, dedicated social worker, and advocate for civil rights. He was a longtime politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1971–1998) and mayor of Oakland (2007–2011).

Dellums was the first African American to serve on the House Armed Services Committee and the first black chairman during the 103rd Congress in 1993–1995. Congress established the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship to honour Representative Dellums’ lifetime efforts in building up the underrepresented students’ representation in the DoD STEM workforce.

Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship Perks

  • Applicants will be granted a full tuition fee.
  • Applicants will receive a Stipend   of $30,000 annually during the Study.
  • Applicants will also get an opportunity to participate in Summer Internships .
  • Applicants will get the opportunity to observe with an experienced mentor.
  • Applicants will receive the Book and Health allowance .
  • Civilian Department of Defense Employment .

Eligibility Criteria for the SMART Scholarship

  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen .
  • Applicants must be 18 or older upon completion of the student’s first college term.
  • Emerging freshman pursuing a bachelor’s degree in one of the SMART STEM disciplines or closely related.
  • Applicants must have graduated high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA from a college/university
  • Applicants must have the ability to complete summer internships.
  • Obtain and Maintain a Security Clearance.
  • After graduation, accept full-time civilian employment with the Department of Defense.
